Background

He joined DIC in April 1978 and was a career employee. He served as head of the Functional Polymers Division from April 2008, and in April 2010, as an Executive Officer, took charge of the Corporate Strategy Unit and the DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art. He became a Director in June 2011 and President the following April, in 2012. As of June 2012 he held 19,000 shares, an order of magnitude below the 851,000 shares of Kiku Kawamura on the same board. He was a president from the employee ranks without a capital base behind him.

Selection

In April 2012 he became Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Kazuo Sugie. Sugie moved to Chairman three years after becoming President in April 2009, and Nakanishi rose to President ten months after becoming a Director in June 2011. In the fiscal year before he took office, ended March 2012, consolidated revenue was ¥734.2 billion, down 32% from ¥1,077.9 billion in FY ended March 2008, and the equity ratio had fallen from 24.1% to 15.1%. The appointment appears to have assigned someone from the Corporate Strategy Unit to rebuild a shrunken core business.

Initiatives

In July 2012 the company acquired the Benda-Lutz group and entered the effect pigments business. In July 2015 it acquired Kingfisher Colours, adding cosmetic pigments. Both deals were in areas adjacent to pigments, adding businesses beyond printing inks through acquisitions. In January 2017 it signed a capital and business alliance with Taiyo Holdings. In the fiscal year ended December 2017, his final year, consolidated revenue was ¥789.4 billion and operating income ¥56.5 billion.
