Background
The eldest son of Masahito Otsuka, he joined Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory in March 1960. He headed development and production from the founding of Otsuka Pharmaceutical in 1964, and in June 1976 succeeded his father as President of Otsuka Pharmaceutical. From 1986 he was also President of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory, leading both the manufacturer of IV solutions and the drug company at the same time, before stepping back to Director and Senior Advisor of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory in December 1998.
Selection
In June 1976 he took over the presidency of Otsuka Pharmaceutical from his father, Masahito Otsuka. The change came 16 years after he joined in 1960 and 12 years after he took part in founding Otsuka Pharmaceutical in 1964 as head of development and production. The holding company Otsuka Holdings did not list on the Tokyo Stock Exchange until 2010; when he became President, Otsuka Pharmaceutical was an unlisted family-run company.
Initiatives
In 1989 the company acquired control of U.S.-based Pharmavite, bringing the health supplement brand Nature Made under its umbrella. By bringing to Japan dietary supplements that had first taken off in the U.S., it built a revenue source that did not rely on pharmaceuticals. After stepping down as President, he became Representative Director and Chairman of Otsuka Holdings when it was launched as a holding company in July 2008.
