Background

He joined Suntory in 1979, became a Director in March 2000, and was named President of Daiichi Suntory Pharma in December 2002. The former Daiichi Pharmaceutical had bought Suntory's prescription drug business in 2002, and Joji Nakayama moved to Daiichi Pharmaceutical as a Director in June 2003, becoming Director and general manager of Corporate Planning in June 2006. After the merger he became an Executive Officer of Daiichi Sankyo in April 2007 and Executive Vice President in April 2010, having come up through Daiichi Pharmaceutical, one of the two predecessors.

Education: Osaka University, Graduate School of Engineering Science, Master's Program (1976)
Education: Northwestern University, Graduate School of Business (MBA, 1979)

Selection

His predecessor, Takashi Shoda, had booked a net loss of ¥215.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2009, the year after the Ranbaxy acquisition, and net income had only just recovered to ¥41.8 billion in FY ended March 2010. In June 2010 Joji Nakayama moved up from Executive Vice President to President and CEO.

Initiatives

In April 2014 the company agreed to have its subsidiary Ranbaxy absorbed by India's Sun Pharma through a share exchange, and on April 21, 2015 it sold all the Sun Pharma shares it had received, exiting overseas generics. Thanks to the share price rise after the agreement, it gained a merger gain of about ¥360 billion and about ¥400 billion in cash in the fiscal year ended March 2015. At the end of 2015 it announced a pivot to oncology, starting from a position of having no cancer drugs at all, and in 2016 set a mid-term management plan targeting operating income of ¥165.0 billion for FY ended March 2021.
