Background

He joined Eisai in October 1975 and became a Director eight years later, in June 1983. He was promoted almost every year: Managing Director in June 1985, Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in June 1986, and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 1987. He became President twelve and a half years after joining. The annual securities reports say nothing about family ties, so what lay behind this speed cannot be read from them.

Education: Suwesutan University, Kellogg School of Management

Selection

In April 1988 he rose from Representative Director and Executive Vice President to President. It was a short run-up, passing through Senior Managing Director and Executive Vice President in a year each. The annual securities reports on hand contain consolidated results only from the fiscal year ended March 1992, so what was happening when he took office cannot be shown in figures. His title changed to Representative Corporate Officer, President and CEO in June 2004, and to Representative Corporate Officer and CEO in June 2014.

Initiatives

The decisions of his tenure come down to two. In 2008 he made MGI Pharma of the US a subsidiary, expanding into oncology. Consolidated operating income fell from ¥105.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2007 to ¥17.7 billion in FY ended March 2008, then recovered to ¥91.8 billion in FY ended March 2009. The other was bringing the Alzheimer's drug lecanemab to practical use in partnership with Biogen. Consolidated net sales went from ¥224.3 billion in FY ended March 1992 to ¥825.4 billion in FY ended March 2026.
