Background

He joined the company in October 1947, became a Director in 1964, Managing Director in 1974 and Senior Managing Director in 1985. In the early 1980s, as the executive in charge of R&D, he decided together with President Kimio Ueno to keep investing in biotechnology research with no prospect of when it would become profitable. In a company whose first two presidents bore the Ueno name, he was the first President from outside the Ueno family.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering, Explosives (now University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering) (1944)

Selection

In March 1987 he became President, succeeding Kimio Ueno. Ueno moved to Representative Director and Chairman, so the founding family remained in management. In the early 1980s, as the executive in charge of R&D, Sano had decided with Ueno to keep investing in biotechnology research, and the choice appears to have been made to carry that research course forward unchanged.
