Background
He joined the company in April 1976, became Executive Officer and General Manager of Corporate Planning in October 2002, Managing Executive Officer in October 2004 and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in March 2010. His time in charge of corporate planning coincided with the period from 2002 when the alliance with Roche got under way. A top executive who came from the planning and administration side rather than research or sales, he became President in March 2012, his 36th year with the company.
Selection
In March 2012 he became President, succeeding Osamu Nagayama, who had served for 20 years. Nagayama moved to Representative Director and Chairman. In the fiscal year ended December 2011, the year before he took office, revenue was ¥373.5 billion and operating income ¥62.4 billion, the second straight year of declining revenue from ¥428.9 billion in FY ended December 2009. Roche's stake had reached 59.89% at the end of December 2009, and he was expected to take over and run the alliance framework.
Initiatives
In March 2014 the company established Rijian Chugai Pharmaceutical in China, gaining a local foothold in addition to overseas sales through Roche. Over his eight years, revenue grew from ¥373.5 billion in the fiscal year ended December 2011, the year before he took office, to ¥686.1 billion in FY ended December 2019, the year he stepped down, and operating income from ¥62.4 billion to ¥210.6 billion. Employees went from 6,779 to 7,394.
