Background

A career employee, he joined Dentsu in April 1981. He became an Executive Officer in April 2011, Director and Executive Officer in June 2014 and Director and Managing Executive Officer in January 2016. He became President two and a half years after joining the board and one year after becoming Managing Executive Officer. A distinctive feature of Dentsu's shareholder base is that two news agencies, Kyodo News at 6.58% and Jiji Press at 5.97%, rank at the top, together holding more than 10%.

In January 2017 he became President and Executive Officer, succeeding Tadashi Ishii, and in March of that year Representative Director, President and Executive Officer. The promotion came in his 36th year since joining in 1981 and one year after he became Director and Managing Executive Officer. In the fiscal year ended December 2016, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥838.3 billion, operating income ¥137.7 billion and net income ¥83.5 billion, up in both revenue and profit. The change was not a response to deteriorating results.

Initiatives

In January 2020 the company moved to a holding company structure and changed its name to Dentsu Group. It posted losses for two straight years: a consolidated operating loss of ¥3.4 billion and net loss of ¥80.8 billion in the fiscal year ended December 2019, and an operating loss of ¥140.6 billion and net loss of ¥159.5 billion in FY ended December 2020. In FY ended December 2021, the year he stepped down, revenue was ¥1,085.5 billion, operating income ¥241.8 billion and net income ¥108.3 billion, the highest operating income of his tenure.
