Background

He joined Dentsu in April 1962 and held one media sales post after another, including head of the Newspaper Division at the Tokyo head office from June 1987 and head of the Sales Division at the Tokyo head office from April 1991. He became a Director in June 1993, Managing Director in June 1995, Senior Managing Director in June 1997 and Executive Vice President in June 1999, and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2000. In the fiscal year ended March 2006 he held 649 shares, comparable to the 457 shares each held by the three Executive Vice Presidents that year. The top ten major shareholders that year were led by two news agencies, Jiji Press at 12.09% and Kyodo News at 7.37%, with no individual shareholders.

Education: Rikkyo University, Faculty of Letters (1962)

Selection

Tateo Mataki became Representative Director and President in June 2002, succeeding Yutaka Narita. Dentsu had listed its shares on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange on November 30, 2001, so the change came half a year after the listing. Of the three Executive Vice Presidents in FY ended March 2006, Tetsu Nakamura and Hiroshi Matsumoto joined in 1963 and became Directors in 1997, and Tatsuyoshi Takashima joined in 1966 and became a Director in 1997, so Mataki, who joined in 1962 and became a Director in 1993, was senior to all of them. Rather than a promotion over the heads of seniors, it was a move up of the most senior of the Executive Vice Presidents.

Initiatives

On November 6, 2002, half a year after he took office, the company moved its head office to Higashi-Shimbashi 1-chome, Minato-ku, Tokyo. The consolidated subsidiary Dentsu Tec, which had gone public on the over-the-counter market in September 1997, was delisted on March 28, 2006 and became a wholly owned subsidiary on April 1 of that year. Consolidated net sales fell from ¥1,789.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2002, his first year, to ¥1,692.9 billion in FY ended March 2003, and recovered to ¥2,094.0 billion in FY ended March 2007. Ordinary income moved through ¥59.7 billion, ¥45.3 billion and ¥70.0 billion in those three years, and net income was ¥27.5 billion, ¥23.0 billion and ¥30.7 billion.
