Selection

In November 1969 he became President, succeeding Iwao Iwanaga, who moved to Chairman the same month. His predecessor Iwanaga had been brought in from Toyo Rayon, where he was Representative Director and Executive Vice President, and Yasuji Torii was the first Director from the company's founding to be promoted to President. It was three years from Executive Vice President to President, during which he served as President of Mitsui Fluorochemical and Mitsui Texaco Chemical and Executive Vice President of Ukishima Petrochemical, entrusted with running joint ventures.

Initiatives

His tenure lasted seven years and seven months, from November 1969 to June 1977. In December 1970 he also became President of Ukishima Petrochemical, the 50-50 joint venture with Nippon Petrochemicals, personally leading the joint operation of ethylene. He concurrently became President of Mitsui Petrochemical Spunbond in March 1971 and of Sanso Jushi Kogyo in November of that year, and became a director of Iran Chemical Development in February 1972. From July 1972 he served as chairman of the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association, and in June 1977 he moved to Chairman.
