Background
He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Keio University in March 1937, joined Mitsui Mining, and moved to Miike Gosei in July 1946. He joined Mitsui Petrochemical Industries at its founding in July 1955, becoming a Director in May 1963, Managing Director in November 1966 and Executive Vice President in November 1971. Whereas his predecessor Yasuji Torii was an applied chemistry engineer, he was a law graduate.
Selection
In June 1977 he became President, succeeding Yasuji Torii, who moved to Chairman the same month. He had served as Executive Vice President for five years and seven months from November 1971. In the same reshuffle Seiki Nakano was promoted to Senior Managing Director, and by 1981 he was in position as Executive Vice President to become the next President. The change appears to have continued the succession by the generation that joined at the company's founding.
Initiatives
His tenure lasted five and a half years, from June 1977 to December 1982, a period when petrochemicals, after the two oil crises, moved toward dealing with excess capacity. The scrapping of 87,000 tons of ethylene capacity at the Iwakuni-Otake Works and 143,000 tons at the Chiba Works took place from 1984 to 1985, carried out under his successor Seiki Nakano. Naritada Tannowa's five and a half years came before ethylene was concentrated at Ukishima Petrochemical, set up 50-50 with Nippon Petrochemicals in November 1967.
