Background

He was born in Osaka in 1906. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Keio University in March 1931 and joined Okura Shoji in April of that year. He left that company in October 1945 and in January 1946 was brought into Daido Sanso as Managing Director and General Manager of General Affairs. He also took charge of sales as General Manager in June 1954 and became Senior Managing Director in April 1955. He was an outsider invited as an executive from a trading company, not someone who had joined straight from university.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Law (1931)

Selection

In June 1960 Mitsuhiko Fujii, who had founded Daido Sanso in March 1933 and served as its president, moved to Chairman, and Handa succeeded him as President. Fujii, a member of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry since 1929, stayed on at the company as Chairman. Handa had been with the company for 14 years and oversaw general affairs and sales as Senior Managing Director. The change appears to have handed day-to-day management from the founder to a professional manager from a trading company.

Initiatives

In September 1961, the year after he took office, the company listed its shares on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Net sales of ¥7.8 billion in the fiscal year ended October 1970 grew to ¥18.6 billion in FY ended October 1974 and ¥28.2 billion in FY ended October 1979. Profits peaked at ordinary income of ¥1.6 billion in FY ended October 1974 and then thinned, and in FY ended October 1979 the company fell into the red with an ordinary loss of ¥14 million and a net loss of ¥44 million. He stepped back to Chairman in January 1980 after 19 years and seven months as President.
