Background

A career employee who joined Sumitomo Chemical in April 1974, he had 37 years with the company by the time he became President. He became an Executive Officer in June 2003, 29 years after joining, Managing Executive Officer in June 2006, and joined the board as Representative Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2008. His successors Keiichi Iwata and Nobuaki Mito became Executive Officers 28 and 30 years after joining, respectively, so the seniority at which these three reached executive rank was nearly the same.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics (1974)

Selection

In April 2011 he became President, succeeding Hiroshi Hirose. He went straight from Representative Director and Managing Executive Officer to President without serving as Senior Managing Executive Officer. In the fiscal year ended March 2011, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥1,982.4 billion and operating income ¥88.0 billion; the change came right after a two-year recovery from FY ended March 2009, when operating income had fallen to ¥2.1 billion with a net loss of ¥59.1 billion.

Initiatives

Over his eight years, consolidated revenue grew from ¥1,982.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2011 to ¥2,318.5 billion in FY ended March 2019, and operating income from ¥88.0 billion to ¥183.0 billion. The path was not smooth, however: in FY ended March 2013 the company posted a net loss of ¥51.0 billion on revenue of ¥1,952.4 billion. It then built up operating income to ¥164.4 billion in FY ended March 2016 and ¥250.9 billion in FY ended March 2018. Employees increased from 29,382 to 32,542.
