Background
He joined Sumitomo Bank in April 1988. He served as Representative Director and President of Jack from June 2001, Nagasakiya from March 2003 and GABA from March 2009, and became Director and Executive Vice President of Gurunavi in December 2012. He joined World in December 2013 as Managing Executive Officer and assistant to the COO, rising to Managing Executive Officer and COO in June 2014. He was an outsider who, after leaving the bank, had served as president or executive vice president of four companies.
Selection
In April 2015 he succeeded Shuzo Terai as President and Executive Officer. It was a promotion a year and four months after joining. In the FY ended March 2015, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥292.6 billion, the second straight decline from ¥329.4 billion in the FY ended March 2013. Net income was only ¥4.5 billion, and the company continued to shrink.
Initiatives
In the FY ended March 2016, his first year, consolidated net sales were ¥271.6 billion, operating income ¥3.6 billion and net income ¥700 million. Sales then moved in the ¥240 billion to ¥250 billion range, and by the FY ended March 2020, his final year, profits had built up to operating income of ¥12.4 billion and net income of ¥8.1 billion. In September 2018 the company relisted on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, returning to the stock market 13 years after going private in 2005.
