Background

Born in Gunma Prefecture in 1894, he graduated from Tokyo Higher Commercial School in March 1918. He was a manager with a commercial education rather than a technical background. He became a Director of affiliate Daini Teijin in September 1934, a Director of Teijin in December 1942, Managing Director in December 1944 and President in November 1945. He belonged to the generation that joined the board during the war and served as President in the year of defeat.

Education: Tokyo Higher Commercial School (now Hitotsubashi University) (1918)

Selection

He became President in November 1945, but resigned in October 1948 to become Minister of Commerce and Industry, also serving as Minister of Finance from December that year. He returned to Teijin as a Director in November 1949 and resigned as Minister of Transport in June 1950. He became Chairman in September 1951 and President again in November 1956. The company was being forced to move away from its founding business, rayon, and the acetate it had mass-produced since 1955 had limited uses and was not translating into sales. The appointment returned a Chairman who had served as a cabinet minister to the presidency at a time when a switch in main raw materials lay ahead.

Initiatives

In January 1957, the year after returning as President, he entered polyester under the Tetoron name through a technical tie-up with Britain's ICI. Nylon was added in 1962, and in October 1971 the company ended production of rayon, its founding business. In 1968 he launched the Future Business Headquarters, diversifying beyond textiles. In 1978, when the core textile business fell into losses in the synthetic fiber slump, he moved to downsizing management.
