Background

He joined Toyo Suisan in April 1968 and, after posts including manager of the Saitama plant, became a director in June 1989. He advanced to Managing Director in June 1993 and Senior Managing Director with representative authority in April 1999, becoming president in June 2003, 35 years after joining. A career employee who rose from the factory floor to representative authority; the top ten shareholders in the FY ended March 2006 were trust banks, life and non-life insurers and the Maruchan shareholding association with 2.15%, with no individuals.

Education: Gakushuin University (1968)

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in June 2003. In the fiscal year ended March 2003, the previous year, consolidated net sales were ¥319.4 billion and ordinary income ¥19.0 billion; net sales were flat from ¥319.0 billion in the FY ended March 2001, while net income had recovered from ¥0.8 billion to ¥7.4 billion. He had taken part in management for four years as a senior managing director with representative authority from April 1999, and the change appears to have handed over restoring profitability rather than expanding scale.

Initiatives

Over his nine years in office consolidated net sales were nearly flat, from ¥319.4 billion in the FY ended March 2003 to ¥321.0 billion in the FY ended March 2012, but ordinary income rose from ¥19.0 billion to ¥27.0 billion and net income from ¥7.4 billion to ¥16.1 billion. Operating income peaked during his tenure at ¥31.1 billion in the FY ended March 2010, 1.6 times the ¥19.9 billion of the FY ended March 2006, four years earlier. It was nine years of thickening profit while holding sales steady; any reshaping of the business mix cannot be read from the figures in the annual securities reports.
