Background

He joined The Industrial Bank of Japan in July 1991 and moved to Suntory in April 1997. He became general manager in the sales headquarters in September 2005, a director of Suntory in March 2007 and head of strategic development in April 2008. He became Executive Officer and head of strategic development at Suntory Holdings in April 2009 and Managing Executive Officer and head of international strategy in April 2010, becoming president after overseeing the overseas business. Suntory Beverage & Food traces its origins to Torii Shoten, founded in February 1899.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Economics; Brandeis University, Graduate School, International Economics, Master's Program in Finance (1989, 1991)

Selection

In January 2011 he became Representative Director and President of the company established in January 2009 to inherit Suntory's beverage and food business. That month, through an absorption-type company split with Suntory Holdings as the splitting company, it made the Orangina Schweppes, Cerebos and Frucor groups subsidiaries and changed its name to Suntory Beverage & Food. His previous post was Managing Executive Officer and head of international strategy at Suntory Holdings. The appointment appears to have matched experience in international strategy to a structure overseeing three overseas groups.

Initiatives

In July 2013 the company listed its shares on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Suntory Holdings remained the major shareholder after the listing with 59.48%. In January 2014 Lucozade Ribena Suntory Limited began the manufacturing and sales business for "Lucozade" and "Ribena" acquired from GlaxoSmithKline plc. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥893.4 billion in the FY ended December 2011 to ¥1,381.0 billion in the FY ended December 2015, and in March 2016 he handed over to Saburo Kogo.
