Background

He joined in April 1977 and advanced to general manager of corporate planning in March 2007, Executive Officer in March 2008, Managing Executive Officer in March 2009 and Managing Director in March 2010. He moved from Managing Director of the holding company to the operating company, serving as Representative Director and President of Kirin Brewery from March 2012 to January 2015. A career employee, he took charge of the core alcoholic beverages business after a long stint in corporate planning.

In March 2015 he succeeded Senji Miyake as Representative Director and President of the holding company. In the fiscal year ended December 2014, the year before he took office, revenue was ¥2,195.7 billion and operating income ¥114.5 billion, while net income of ¥32.3 billion was down more than 60% from ¥85.6 billion the previous year. Revenue had also fallen from ¥2,254.5 billion the previous year. He was promoted after three years as president of Kirin Brewery, and the change came amid continuing profit declines.

Initiatives

The company withdrew from Brazil by selling the Brazilian business to Heineken. His first year, the FY ended December 2015, ended with a net loss of ¥47.3 billion, but in the FY ended December 2017 operating income recovered to ¥211.1 billion and net income to ¥128.6 billion. Consolidated headcount fell from 39,855 at the end of December 2016 to 31,033 at the end of December 2017. After operating income fell to ¥87.7 billion in the FY ended December 2019, in the FY ended December 2023, his final year, revenue was ¥2,134.3 billion, operating income ¥150.3 billion and net income ¥112.6 billion.
