Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Kyoto Imperial University in March 1937 and joined Kirin Brewery that April. Together with Yoshiro Kuroiwa and Yoshio Yamaguchi, who also joined in April 1937, he became a director in September 1970, the three entering the board at once. He became general manager of general affairs in February 1971, Managing Director in September 1973 and Senior Managing Director in April 1976. A career employee from general affairs, he took 33 years from joining to reach the board.

Education: Kyoto Imperial University, Faculty of Law (now Kyoto University) (1937)

Selection

In April 1978 he succeeded Yasusaburo Sato as President, with Sato moving to Chairman. In the same April 1978, his classmates Yoshiro Kuroiwa and Yoshio Yamaguchi rose together to Senior Managing Director, so the president came from among the three who joined in 1937. He had become senior managing director in April 1976 and reached the presidency in two years. In the fiscal year ended January 1978, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥786.3 billion and ordinary income ¥40.6 billion, about 60% higher than four years earlier in the FY ended January 1974. The change appears to have been close to a rotation amid continued growth.

Initiatives

In December 1981 the company adopted its "Long-Term Management Vision (21st Long-Term Plan)" and entered its second phase of diversification. In 1982 it started a pharmaceuticals business and set up a development research laboratory, and in May 1983 established Kirin City. Net sales grew from ¥830.5 billion in the FY ended January 1979 to ¥1,069.8 billion in the FY ended January 1983, passing the ¥1 trillion mark at ¥1,041.7 billion in the FY ended January 1982. Whereas the first phase of diversification had added beverages and foods, this plan chose pharmaceuticals, a field that earns through technology.
