Background

A career employee, he joined in April 1972 and became president 38 years later. He advanced to councillor and general manager of corporate strategy in March 1999, Director in March 2003 and Managing Director in March 2004, and became Senior Managing Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in March 2009. He rose to the board from corporate strategy, not from manufacturing or research.

Education: Kyoto Sangyo University, Faculty of Law, Law (1972)

Selection

In March 2010 he succeeded Hitoshi Ogita as president. In the fiscal year ended December 2009, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,472.4 billion, operating income ¥82.8 billion and net income ¥47.6 billion, so the change did not come amid collapsing results. He was promoted from Senior Managing Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer. The appointment appears to have entrusted the succession to someone who had long overseen corporate strategy.

Initiatives

In 2016 the company acquired four European premium beer companies, bringing Peroni and Grolsch under its umbrella. He was also involved in the decision to buy the former SABMiller's Central and Eastern European beer business for about ¥899.1 billion, putting Europe at the core. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,489.4 billion in the FY ended December 2010, his first year, to ¥1,857.4 billion in the FY ended December 2015, his final year, and operating income from ¥95.3 billion to ¥135.1 billion. Headcount also rose from 16,712 to 22,194.
