Background
He joined Yamazaki Baking in April 1964 and rose to Director in August 1970 and Managing Director in January 1979. He became President 15 years after joining and is a career employee with no experience at other companies. Since March 1999 he has also served as Chairman of the joint venture Yamazaki-Nabisco (now Yamazaki Biscuits).

He became Representative Director and President in March 1979, a promotion right after becoming Managing Director that January and eight and a half years after joining the board. He has remained President ever since, a tenure of 47 years. Among major shareholders in the fiscal year ended December 2025, Iijima Kosan held 9.5% and the Iijima Tojuro Memorial Foundation for Food Science and Technology 6.32%, with corporations bearing the family name at the top.
Initiatives
In January 1982 the company combined its daily products division and Sun Every to launch Sun Shop Yamazaki, entering the convenience store business in earnest and building its own store network. That company changed its name to Daily Yamazaki in January 1999. In 2007 the company took a stake in Fujiya, making it a 35%-owned equity-method affiliate, and with an additional subscription in November 2008 made it a 51% subsidiary, taking on its rebuilding after a scandal. In March 2023 it acquired all shares of YK Baking Company, which handles Kobeya's packaged bread business. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥737.5 billion in the fiscal year ended December 2005 to ¥1,311.4 billion in FY ended December 2025, with operating profit of ¥61.1 billion.
