Background

He graduated from the architecture department of the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Engineering in June 1971 and joined Obayashi the following July. He became a Director in June 2001, deputy head of the Tokyo building division in April 2002, Managing Director in June 2003 and Managing Executive Officer in June 2005. In April 2007 he became Senior Managing Executive Officer and head of the Tokyo building division, and two months later, in his 36th year with the company, became President. He is a career employee who came up through the Tokyo building division.

In June 2007 he succeeded Norio Wakimura as President. Of the Executive Vice Presidents appointed that year, Keisho Cho had joined in April 1968 and Masashi Honjo in April 1969, so Shiraishi, who joined in July 1971, was the most junior of the three. In the fiscal year ended March 2007, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,567.9 billion and operating profit ¥47.5 billion, flat from ¥46.7 billion the previous year. He was promoted two months after becoming Senior Managing Executive Officer.

Initiatives

Over 11 years in office, consolidated net sales grew 21% from ¥1,567.9 billion in FY ended March 2007 to ¥1,900.6 billion in FY ended March 2018. In his third year, FY ended March 2010, net sales fell to ¥1,341.4 billion, and the company posted an operating loss of ¥62.5 billion and a net loss of ¥53.3 billion. Operating profit recovered to ¥23.2 billion the next year, FY ended March 2011, and grew to ¥106.4 billion in FY ended March 2016 and ¥137.8 billion in FY ended March 2018. The operating margin rose from 3.0% in FY ended March 2007 to 7.2% in FY ended March 2018.
