Background

He graduated from the architecture department of Tokyo Imperial University's Faculty of Engineering in March 1941 and joined Obayashi that April. A grandson of founder Yoshigoro Obayashi, he succeeded as the third President in 1943 after the death of his father, Yoshio Obayashi. He became President that November, at age 25 in his third year with the company. As of January 1958 he was also the largest shareholder with 19.63% of issued shares, so the founding family held both management and capital.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture (now University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering) (1941)

Selection

Shortly after capital was increased to ¥15 million in April 1943, he succeeded to the presidency following the death of Yoshio Obayashi. He was appointed while serving in the military, and no record shows how the successor was chosen. He thus inherited, in wartime, a business that had taken about 50 years from its founding to become the industry leader. In November 1943 he also became President of Naigai Mokuzai Kogyo.

Initiatives

His tenure lasted 46 years, during which non-consolidated net sales expanded from ¥34.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1959 to ¥944.7 billion in FY ended March 1989. He also became President of Naniwa Tochi in January 1955, Obayashi Road in November 1960 and Shock Beton Japan in January 1965, and Vice Chairman of the Overseas Construction Association of Japan in June 1961. After the first oil crisis, in FY ended March 1976, net sales fell from ¥526.9 billion to ¥425.4 billion and ordinary profit from ¥17.6 billion to ¥12.8 billion. In June 1989 he handed the presidency to Takao Tsumuro, who had no family ties to the Obayashis, and became Chairman.
