Background
He joined Obayashi in April 1977. He became an Executive Officer in April 2010, Managing Executive Officer in October 2012, a Director in June 2015 and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2016, and became President in March 2018, in his 41st year with the company. Takeo Obayashi of the founding family held 2.33% as the fourth-largest shareholder in the fiscal year ended March 2015, but Hasuwa is a career employee without a shareholding base.
Selection
In March 2018 he succeeded Toru Shiraishi as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2017, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,872.7 billion and operating profit ¥133.7 billion, up 26% from ¥106.4 billion the previous year. He was promoted from Senior Managing Executive Officer, and the change came while results were growing. In the following year, FY ended March 2019, net sales grew to ¥2,039.6 billion and operating profit to ¥155.5 billion.
Initiatives
Over his seven years in office, consolidated net sales grew 38% from ¥1,900.6 billion (FY ended March 2018) to ¥2,620.1 billion (FY ended March 2025). Profits were uneven, however: operating profit in FY ended March 2022 was ¥41.1 billion, a third of the previous year's ¥123.2 billion. It then recovered to ¥93.8 billion in FY ended March 2023 and ¥143.4 billion in FY ended March 2025. Even in FY ended March 2024, when net sales rose to ¥2,325.1 billion, operating profit was only ¥79.4 billion.
