1917年に岩崎小彌太氏の出資で光学計器部門と反射鏡部門を統合した日本光学工業が起源。
1980年に半導体露光装置NSR-1010Gを完成させ、1983年に露光装置で世界シェア首位に立った。
カメラ・半導体露光装置・ヘルスケア機器を手がける光学機器メーカーで、カメラが利益の柱である。
前身は1917年設立の日本光学工業。
1988年にニコンへ商号変更し、2009年にベルギーのMetris NVを完全子会社化した。
2022年にはSLM Solutionsを買収。
光学技術を軸に、クロスボーダーM&Aで事業ポートフォリオを広げた。
