1888年に住友が別子鉱業所に設置した工作方が起源。
1938年に独サイクロ社と減速機の技術提携を結び、1969年に浦賀重工業を合併して造船へ事業を拡大した。減速機では1969年時点で国内シェア30%を占めた首位で、売上高1兆668億円の機械メーカーである。
