Background

He worked at the Bank of Japan, serving as head of the Nagoya branch from July 2003 and Director-General of the Policy Board Secretariat from July 2005. He joined SECOM as an adviser in May 2007 and became Managing Director the following June. It was nine years from joining to the presidency, without experience in security operations or equipment development. The only individual among the top ten major shareholders in the FY ended March 2016 was founder Makoto Iida with 1.85%; Nakayama was not among them.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law (1976)

Selection

In May 2016 he succeeded Hiroshi Ito as President, appointed from Managing Director nine years after joining from the Bank of Japan in 2007. In the fiscal year ended March 2016, the year before he took over, consolidated net sales were ¥881.0 billion and operating income ¥128.6 billion, up from ¥840.7 billion and ¥123.6 billion the year before. It was not a change forced by a need to fix results, and appears to have been an appointment placing someone from finance at the helm of the parent company.

Initiatives

From the FY ended March 2017, his first year, to the FY ended March 2019, his last, consolidated net sales grew for three straight years, to ¥928.0 billion, ¥970.6 billion and ¥1,013.8 billion. Net income also rose from ¥84.1 billion to ¥92.0 billion. Operating income, however, stayed in the ¥130 billion range at ¥131.0 billion, ¥135.4 billion and ¥130.2 billion, so profit was flat even as sales passed ¥1 trillion.
