Background

He served as head of the political news department of The Yomiuri Shimbun Tokyo from June 2003, as general manager of the editorial bureau from June 2007 and as Executive Officer and head of the Media Strategy Bureau from June 2008. He became a Director and head of the Media Strategy Bureau of that company in June 2009, and moved to Nippon Television as Director and Executive Officer in June 2010. Rather than a career broadcaster, his background was in the newspaper's editorial division and the group's media strategy.

Education: Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies, French

Selection

In June 2011 he succeeded Tomomasa Hosokawa as Representative Director, President and Executive Officer, one year after becoming a Director and Executive Officer of Nippon Television, and continued to serve as a director of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings after taking office. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2011, consolidated revenue was ¥297.9 billion, ordinary profit ¥38.7 billion and net income ¥21.0 billion, with profit up from revenue of ¥296.9 billion and ordinary profit of ¥27.2 billion the previous year. The appointment put a newspaper executive directly at the top of the broadcaster.

Initiatives

In October 2012 the company became a certified broadcasting holding company, Nippon Television Holdings, and split off Nippon Television Network as the terrestrial broadcasting operating company. Okubo also served as Representative Director and President of the newly split-off Nippon Television Network. Consolidated revenue rose from ¥297.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2011, the year before his appointment, to ¥423.7 billion in the FY ended March 2018, his final year, and ordinary profit from ¥38.7 billion to ¥61.2 billion. In June 2018 he became chairman of the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association.
