Background

He became a director of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings in June 2017 and served as Representative Director and President of Yomiuriland. He became a Director of Nippon Television in June 2019 and Representative Director, President and Executive Officer the following year, in June 2020. He continued to serve as a director of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings after becoming President, and from June 2022 also served as an outside director of Japan Petroleum Exploration. He came to the top of the broadcaster not from broadcasting operations but by way of managing the newspaper group and an amusement park business.

In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2020, consolidated revenue was ¥426.6 billion and operating profit ¥43.1 billion, with operating profit down 13% from ¥49.7 billion the previous year. It was the second successive appointment of a director of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings to the top post.

In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2021, consolidated revenue was ¥391.3 billion and operating profit ¥34.5 billion, with both declining from ¥426.6 billion and ¥43.1 billion the previous year. In the following FY ended March 2022, revenue was ¥406.4 billion and operating profit ¥58.7 billion, with operating profit exceeding its pre-appointment level. In the FY ended March 2023 revenue was ¥414.0 billion and operating profit ¥46.6 billion, and in the FY ended March 2024 revenue was ¥423.5 billion and operating profit ¥41.9 billion, so operating profit fell for two straight years.
