Background
He joined Japanese National Railways in 1977 and moved to Kyushu Railway Company when it was established in April 1987. He worked his way through transport operations as general manager of the transport department in the Technology and Operations Headquarters, general manager of the transport department in the Railway Business Headquarters and head of the Kagoshima Branch, and became a Director and head of the Kagoshima Branch in 2005. From 2008 he headed the Railway Business Headquarters, and in 2013, as Representative Director and Senior Managing Director, he also served as head of the Northern Kyushu Regional Head Office. It took him 37 years from joining JNR to the presidency, and 27 years from joining Kyushu Railway.

In June 2014 he was promoted from Representative Director and Senior Managing Director to President. In the previous fiscal year, ended March 2014, non-consolidated ordinary profit was ¥11.6 billion; in his first year, the FY ended March 2015, consolidated revenue was ¥357.4 billion and ordinary profit ¥25.6 billion. The company had been unlisted since its founding in 1987, and full privatization and listing in October 2016 came in the first half of his tenure.
Initiatives
In October 2016 the company was fully privatized through the sale of 160 million common shares held by the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency, an incorporated administrative agency, and listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and on the Fukuoka Stock Exchange. Ahead of the listing it wrote down its railway assets in a single impairment, posting a net loss of ¥433.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2016. The following FY ended March 2017 turned to operating profit of ¥58.7 billion and net income of ¥44.8 billion, and consolidated revenue grew to ¥440.4 billion by the FY ended March 2019. In the FY ended March 2021 the COVID-19 pandemic brought revenue down to ¥293.9 billion with an operating loss of ¥22.9 billion.
