Background

He joined Japanese National Railways in 1985 and moved to Kyushu Railway Company in 1987. He served in succession as general manager of the planning, transport and sales departments of the Railway Business Headquarters, and became a Director and general manager of the General Affairs Department in June 2012. From September that year he also headed the Cruise Train Headquarters, became head of the Railway Business Headquarters and the Northern Kyushu Regional Head Office in 2016, and head of the Corporate Planning Headquarters in 2020. He is a career employee who has overseen railway planning, transport and sales end to end.

Selection

In April 2022 he succeeded Toshihiko Aoyagi as Representative Director, President and Executive Officer, and CEO, with Aoyagi moving to Representative Director, Chairman and Executive Officer that month. In the previous fiscal year, ended March 2022, consolidated revenue was ¥329.5 billion and operating profit ¥3.9 billion, partway through a recovery from the operating loss of ¥22.9 billion in the FY ended March 2021. For the two years before his appointment he had headed the Corporate Planning Headquarters.

Initiatives

The Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen opened in September 2022, and part of the Nagasaki Main Line's railway facilities was transferred to the Saga-Nagasaki Railway Management Center, a general incorporated association, shifting to a model separating track ownership from operations. In October 2024 the hotel business was consolidated into JR Kyushu Hotels and Resorts by merging three companies, and in June 2023 the company made Fuji Bambi a subsidiary. Consolidated revenue grew from ¥383.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2023 to ¥500.4 billion in the FY ended March 2026, and operating profit from ¥34.3 billion to ¥74.0 billion.
