Background

He joined Kawasaki Kisen in April 1984 and remained with the company throughout his career. He became an Executive Officer in April 2011, a Managing Executive Officer in April 2016, a Director in June that year and Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2018. He took 27 years from joining to become an Executive Officer and 35 years to reach the presidency, rising to President after one year as a Senior Managing Executive Officer with representative authority.

Selection

In April 2019 he succeeded Eizo Murakami as President. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2019, the company posted an operating loss of ¥24.7 billion and a net loss of ¥111.1 billion on consolidated revenue of ¥836.7 billion, swinging into the red from net income of ¥10.3 billion the previous year. It had also posted a net loss of ¥139.4 billion in the FY ended March 2017, so two of the three most recent years ended in a net loss. The appointment appears to have entrusted him with rebuilding the core shipping business, which kept losing money.

Initiatives

He passed on diversification into non-shipping fields and chose concentrated investment in car carriers, LNG carriers and steelmaking raw materials transport. He accepted the long-term large shareholding of Effissimo, which had become the largest shareholder, and brought in outside directors it recommended. Consolidated results returned to the black with net income of ¥5.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2020, then rose to ¥642.4 billion in the FY ended March 2022 and ¥694.9 billion in the FY ended March 2023. In the FY ended March 2025, his final year, the company still delivered revenue of ¥1,047.9 billion and net income of ¥305.3 billion.
