Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1925, joined Sumitomo Bank, and in December 1944 moved to Sumitomo Honsha as deputy head of its Tokyo branch. After the war he served as Managing Director of Sumitomo Corporation from March 1947 and Senior Managing Director from November 1952. Having worked at the heart of the Sumitomo group in banking, the head company and trading, he became Representative Director and President of Sumitomo Realty & Development in November 1956 without any hands-on experience in real estate.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Law (now University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law) (1925)

Selection

In November 1956 he moved from Senior Managing Director of Sumitomo Corporation to Representative Director and President of Sumitomo Realty & Development. The company had been set up in December 1949 as a successor to the real estate arm of Sumitomo Honsha, dissolved in the zaibatsu breakup, and had inherited only the properties left over after Mitsubishi Estate had taken Marunouchi and Mitsui Fudosan Nihonbashi. In May 1957, six months after he took office, it changed its name from Izumi Fudosan to Sumitomo Fudosan, and in April 1963 it absorbed Sumitomo Honsha, which was in liquidation. The company appears to have chosen someone who knew both the head company and the trading house for the job of restoring the Sumitomo name and completing the postwar settlement.

Initiatives

During his tenure he built the twin businesses of leasing and sales. The company completed the Mejirodai Apartments in July 1962, began selling residential lots in Chofu, Tokyo in September that year, and moved into condominium sales for the first time in August 1964. In October 1970 it listed its shares on the first sections of the Tokyo and Osaka stock exchanges. In March 1974, two months before he stepped down, it completed the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building, a pioneer of the Shinjuku subcenter.
