Background
He joined Bank of Fukuoka in April 1966 and became General Manager of Corporate Planning in January 1992. He advanced to Director and General Manager of Corporate Planning in June 1993, Managing Director in June 1995 and Senior Managing Director (Representative Director) in June 1999, and became Director and Deputy President in April 2000. He became Director and President in April 2005, also serving as an Executive Officer from June 2006. As of the fiscal year ended March 2013 he held 50,000 common shares.

He became Director, Chairman and President (Representative Director) of Fukuoka Financial Group when it was formed in April 2007, holding both chairman and president roles himself. He did not step down as Director and President of Bank of Fukuoka, and the officers' roster for the fiscal year ended March 2013 still lists him as its sitting President. The two Directors and Executive Vice Presidents in the same roster, Takashige Shibato and Takashi Yoshikai, had also risen to the board from General Manager of Corporate Planning at Bank of Fukuoka, so all three including Tani had passed through the same department.

Over the seven years from April 2007, when he became Chairman and President on the formation of the holding company, to June 2014, consolidated ordinary profit moved from ¥3.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2009 to ¥57.0 billion in the FY ended March 2014, and net income from ¥21.9 billion to ¥36.1 billion. In the officers' roster for the FY ended March 2013, the two Directors and Executive Vice Presidents also served as directors of Shinwa Bank and Kumamoto Family Bank (now Kumamoto Bank) respectively. In the FY ended March 2011 the largest shareholder was Japan Trustee Services Bank with 7.15%, and among operating companies Kyushu Electric Power held the most at 2.21%.
