Background

He joined Ricoh in April 1973. He became Deputy General Manager of the Imaging System Business Group in July 1999 and its General Manager in October 2000. In October 2004 he moved to General Manager of the MFP Business Group, building his career in the copier and multifunction product divisions. As an officer he became an Executive Officer in June 2000, Senior Executive Officer in June 2002, Managing Director in June 2003 and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2005. In the officer list for the fiscal year ended March 2012 he held 33,000 shares.

Selection

In April 2007 he succeeded Masamitsu Sakurai as Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer. Sakurai had been President for 11 years from April 1996 and after the change remained as Chairman and Chairman of the Board, listed above Kondo in the officer list for the fiscal year ended March 2012. In the FY ended March 2007, just before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥2,068.9 billion, operating income ¥174.4 billion and net income ¥111.7 billion, all above the previous year's ¥1,915.1 billion, ¥152.0 billion and ¥97.1 billion. In the same list, Zenji Miura, who became Executive Vice President, had come up through the head of accounting and the corporate planning office, a different background from Kondo, who had led business groups.

Initiatives

In October 2008 the company acquired the U.S. office equipment dealer IKON Office Solutions through its U.S. subsidiary. Consolidated employees rose from 83,456 in the fiscal year ended March 2008 to 108,477 in the FY ended March 2009. In July 2010 it merged its sales division with seven domestic sales companies to form Ricoh Japan, and in October 2011 it bought HOYA's PENTAX Imaging Systems business. Consolidated results peaked in the FY ended March 2008 with net sales of ¥2,220.0 billion and operating income of ¥181.5 billion, then declined, and in the FY ended March 2012 net sales fell to ¥1,827.3 billion, with an operating loss of ¥31.9 billion and a net loss of ¥44.6 billion. In the following FY ended March 2013 operating income recovered to ¥58.2 billion and net income to ¥38.9 billion.
