Background

He joined Mitsubishi Bank in April 1936, became a Director in May 1965 and Managing Director in November 1967. He moved to Nippon Kogaku in May 1969 as Executive Vice President, with no background in the company's engineering or business divisions. Mitsubishi Bank was the largest shareholder in the shareholder registers at both the end of March 1966 and the end of March 1970, and he was a choice sent in from the side providing the capital.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Law, Law (1934)

Selection

In May 1973, Yutaka Sugi moved to Chairman and Executive Vice President Iyanaga became President. Sitting alongside him in the executive suite were career employees with around 40 years at the company: Executive Vice President Masahiko Fukeda, who joined in 1937 from the ordnance engineering department, and Managing Director Kinjiro Fukai, who joined in 1930. It had been four years since he became Executive Vice President, so the change was not one chosen on the basis of length of service. In the fiscal year ended March 1973, before he took office, non-consolidated net sales were ¥40.4 billion and ordinary income ¥3.4 billion.

Initiatives

He rebuilt the eyewear business and the European sales network. In April 1973 he became President of Nikon Megane, and from the following month also served as President of Nippon Kogaku. He personally oversaw the European subsidiaries, becoming President of Nikon GmbH in June that year, a Director of Nikon AG in October and President of Nikon Europe B.V. in December. In the fiscal year ended March 1976, after the oil crisis, ordinary income halved to ¥1.9 billion on non-consolidated net sales of ¥57.8 billion, but by the FY ended March 1978, his final year, results recovered to ¥74.6 billion and ¥3.5 billion.
