Background

He joined Seiyu Store in April 1978 and moved to Ryohin Keikaku in July 2005. He handled the overseas business as Executive Officer and General Manager in the Overseas Business Division from February 2008 and as Director, Executive Officer and head of the Overseas Business Division from May 2011, then rose to Managing Director in May 2012 and Senior Managing Director in May 2013. It was ten years from his move to Ryohin Keikaku to becoming President, seven of them as the executive in charge of the overseas business.

In May 2015 he succeeded Masaaki Kanai as President. In the fiscal year ended February 2015, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥259.6 billion and operating income ¥23.8 billion, with net sales up 38% in two years from ¥188.3 billion and ¥18.4 billion in the FY ended February 2013. Employees had also grown from 3,069 to 4,795. The executive who had overseen the overseas business took the top job in the middle of a store expansion drive.

Initiatives

During his tenure, net sales grew 57% from ¥259.6 billion in the fiscal year ended February 2015 to ¥408.8 billion in the FY ended February 2019, and employees nearly doubled from 4,795 to 9,137. In the FY ended February 2018 the company posted net sales of ¥378.8 billion, operating income of ¥45.3 billion and net income of ¥30.1 billion. It changed its fiscal year-end from February to August, and in the transitional FY ended August 2020 posted a net loss of ¥16.9 billion. In the FY ended August 2021 it recovered to net sales of ¥453.6 billion and net income of ¥33.9 billion.
