Background
He joined Toyota Motor Co. in April 1968 and came up through production engineering. He became General Manager of Toyota Motor's Vehicle Production Engineering Division in June 1996 and a Director of the company in June 1997. In June 2000 he moved to Toyoda Gosei as Executive Vice President, becoming President the following year, in June 2001. Born in July 1943, he became President at 57.
Selection
He rose to President just one year after becoming Executive Vice President. In the officer list for the fiscal year ended March 2007, Chairman Akio Matsubara had arrived as Vice Chairman in June 2005 from the post of Senior Managing Director at Toyota Motor. Of the three Executive Vice Presidents in the same year, Hajime Wakayama and Tsuneji Ohara had joined Toyota Motor Co., and the only Toyoda Gosei career employee was Takamasa Suzuki, who joined in April 1968. Toyota Motor was the largest shareholder, holding 42.66% of the outstanding shares in the FY ended March 2006.
Initiatives
In February 2002 he concluded a business transfer agreement with Toyo Tire & Rubber under which Toyoda Gosei acquired its airbag business and transferred its anti-vibration rubber business. From 2003 to 2005 the company built new production bases in Zhangjiagang and Foshan in China, Haiphong in Vietnam and South Africa, and in Japan opened the Kitakyushu plant in September 2005, the Kanagawa plant in December 2006 and the Seto plant in April 2007. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥498.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2006 to ¥662.5 billion in the FY ended March 2008, and operating income from ¥19.7 billion to ¥52.1 billion.
