Background
He joined Suzuki in January 1994 and became a Director nine years later, in June 2003. He rose to Director and Senior Managing Officer in June 2006 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2011, becoming President after four years as Executive Vice President. It took him 21 years and five months from joining to become President, close to the 20 years and two months of his predecessor Osamu Suzuki. The handover from Osamu Suzuki to Toshihiro Suzuki was from father to son.
Selection
In June 2015 he succeeded Osamu Suzuki as President. Osamu had led the company for about 29 years in total since taking office in June 1978, including a period as Chairman and CEO, and Toshihiro took over from him. In the fiscal year ended March 2015, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥3,015.4 billion and operating income ¥179.4 billion, and Volkswagen was the largest shareholder with 19.89%. The appointment appears to have been meant to advance the cleanup of the capital relationship and a generational change at the same time.
Initiatives
In 2018, misconduct in fuel economy measurement and final vehicle inspections came to light, and he worked to prevent a recurrence. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥3,015.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2015, the year before he took office, to ¥5,843.0 billion in the FY ended March 2025, and operating income from ¥179.4 billion to ¥642.9 billion. Employees also rose from 57,409 in the FY ended March 2015 to 72,372 in the FY ended March 2024.
