Background
He joined Suzuki in April 1958 and became a Director five years later, in November 1963. He became Senior Managing Director in November 1973 and advanced to President four years and seven months later. He served 15 years as a director before becoming President, the last four years and seven months of them as Senior Managing Director. In June 1978 he was promoted from Senior Managing Director to President, 15 years after joining the board in November 1963 and four years and seven months after becoming Senior Managing Director in November 1973. He then served 22 years until stepping back to Representative Director, Chairman and CEO in June 2000, and again held the presidency as Representative Director, Chairman and President from December 2008 to June 2015, standing at the top for about 29 years in total.

In June 2000 he stepped down as President to become Representative Director, Chairman and CEO, and in December 2008 returned to the presidency as Representative Director, Chairman and President. In the meantime a capital alliance with Volkswagen was concluded, and by the fiscal year ended March 2010 Volkswagen was the largest shareholder with 19.37%. Even in the FY ended March 2015 it still held 19.89%. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,521.1 billion in the FY ended March 2000 to ¥3,015.4 billion in the FY ended March 2015, and employees from 30,612 to 57,409.
