Background
He joined Hino Motors in April 1981, became an Executive Officer in April 2011, a Managing Officer in April 2012 and a Senior Managing Officer in April 2015. In April 2016 he moved to parent Toyota Motor as a Managing Officer, returning to Hino a year later, in April 2017, as an advisor. Toyota was the largest shareholder with 50.1% as of the fiscal year ended March 2015, so he spent the year before becoming President at the parent itself.
Selection
In June 2017 he succeeded Yasuhiko Ichihashi as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2017, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥1,683.7 billion and operating income ¥71.2 billion, with operating income down nearly 30% from ¥98.3 billion the year before. Coming after a year at Toyota itself, the change appears to have reflected the parent's wishes.
Initiatives
In the fiscal year ended March 2019, his second year, net sales were ¥1,981.3 billion and operating income ¥86.7 billion, both the highest of his tenure. In the following FY ended March 2020, net sales fell to ¥1,815.5 billion and operating income to ¥54.9 billion, and in the FY ended March 2021, the year he stepped down, the company swung into the red with net sales of ¥1,498.4 billion, operating income of ¥12.2 billion and a net loss of ¥7.4 billion. The sales he had built up over two years from ¥1,683.7 billion the year before he took office were lost over the next two.
