Background

Born in Tokyo in 1911, he graduated from Tokyo Imperial University's Faculty of Economics in March 1936 and in April that year joined the predecessor company, Tokyo Gas Electric Engineering. He served as head of the works section from May 1944 and the general affairs section from October 1945, then became a Director in July 1951, Managing Director in November 1957 and Senior Managing Director in November 1969. He also served as an advisory director of Teikoku Jidosha Kogyo from November 1955 and as its Chairman from May 1970.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Economics (1936)

Selection

In May 1974 he succeeded Masanobu Matsukata as President. Matsukata moved to Chairman, and in the same month Kiyoshi Iemoto and Ryoichi Takada became Executive Vice Presidents. Arakawa was promoted to Senior Managing Director in November 1969, 12 years after Iemoto, who had reached that rank in November 1957, so the appointment appears to have leapfrogged those two in the pecking order. In the fiscal year ended March 1974, the year before he took office, non-consolidated net sales were ¥194.9 billion and net income was ¥4.2 billion.

Initiatives

He carried on the truck-only course set by the October 1966 business alliance with Toyota Motor, serving as President while remaining Chairman of Teikoku Jidosha Kogyo. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥232.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1975, his first year, to ¥364.8 billion in the FY ended March 1980 and ¥389.4 billion in the FY ended March 1981, doubling in six years from ¥194.9 billion the year before he took office. Ordinary income peaked during his tenure at ¥11.0 billion in the FY ended March 1980, and was ¥8.0 billion in the FY ended March 1981.
