Background
He joined Hitachi Zosen in April 1982. He became an Executive Officer in April 2011, Managing Executive Officer in April 2013, Managing Director in June 2015 and Executive Vice President in April 2017, and President and COO in April 2020. He took nine years from executive officer to President, a different climb from his predecessor Takashi Tanisho, who rose in four.
Selection
In April 2020 he succeeded Takashi Tanisho as President and COO. In the fiscal year ended March 2020, the year before, consolidated net sales were ¥402.4 billion and operating income ¥13.9 billion, with net income down to ¥2.1 billion. Like his predecessor he started as COO, taking on the CEO role two years later, in April 2022. For two successive generations, the company used a handover in which the Chairman held the chief executive role while the President handled execution.
Initiatives
Over his four years in office consolidated net sales grew ¥147.3 billion, from ¥408.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2021 to ¥555.8 billion in FY ended March 2024. Operating income rose from ¥15.4 billion to ¥24.3 billion and net income from ¥4.2 billion to ¥18.9 billion. Sales, operating income and net income all exceeded the previous year in every one of his four fiscal years, with no year of decline. The operating margin also rose from 3.8% to 4.4%, restoring profitability that had thinned during his predecessor's seven years.
