Background
He joined Hitachi Zosen in April 1973. He reached executive officer 36 years later, in April 2009, joined the board in June 2010 and became Managing Director in April 2012. In April 2013, in his 40th year with the company, he became President and COO. It took him only two years and ten months to go from director to President, out of proportion to the 36 years it took to reach the executive ranks.
Selection
In April 2013 he succeeded Minoru Furukawa as President and COO. In the fiscal year ended March 2013, the year before, consolidated net sales were ¥296.7 billion and operating income ¥11.4 billion, with sales down ¥6.3 billion from ¥303.0 billion the previous year. When he became President he was not chief executive; he took on the CEO role three years later, in April 2016. It was a handover in which the predecessor stayed above as Chairman and passed on only execution first.
Initiatives
Over his seven years in office consolidated net sales grew ¥105.7 billion, from ¥296.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2013 to ¥402.4 billion in FY ended March 2020. Operating income, however, only moved from ¥11.4 billion to ¥13.9 billion, and the operating margin fell from 3.8% to 3.5%. In FY ended March 2014 operating income was ¥7.9 billion and net income ¥3.7 billion, and in FY ended March 2018 they fell to ¥5.9 billion and ¥2.1 billion. It was seven years in which scale expanded but profitability did not follow.
