Background

He left Sharp in April 1972 and joined Alps Electric the same month. He became head of the Kakuda division in March 1981, a Director in June 1982, Managing Director in June 1985 and Senior Managing Director in October 1986, and Representative Director and President in June 1988. Alps Electric's predecessor was Kataoka Electric, established in Ota Ward, Tokyo, in November 1948, and at the end of March 1980 Katsutaro Kataoka was the fifth-largest shareholder with 3.40%. At the end of March 2011, by contrast, no individual was among the top ten shareholders, and Masataka Kataoka held only 898,000 shares.

Selection

Among the directors listed in the annual securities report for the fiscal year ended March 2011, the years from joining to becoming a Director were 23 for Nobuhiko Kometani, 24 for Toshihiro Kuriyama, 27 for Yozo Yasuoka and Yasuhiro Fujii and 33 for Shuji Takamura, while Masataka Kataoka's ten was the shortest. He became a Director the year after becoming head of the Kakuda division in March 1981, Managing Director three years later and Senior Managing Director one year and four months after that, then moved from Senior Managing Director to President in one year and eight months. He took office in June 1988, three months after the subsidiary Alpine listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in March that year.

Initiatives

He expanded production bases into Asia and reduced domestic plants. Local subsidiaries were set up one after another, in Malaysia and Taiwan in 1989, Hong Kong in 1991, Ningbo, China, in 1993 and Wuxi in 1995. At home, the Morioka plant was closed in May 2002 and the Soma plant in March 2010 as part of management restructuring, and in May 2010 Alps Green Devices was set up through a business alliance with the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan. Consolidated net sales peaked during his tenure at ¥709.6 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2006, then fell to ¥538.9 billion in the FY ended March 2009, with an operating loss of ¥26.5 billion and a net loss of ¥70.0 billion. In the FY ended March 2012, just before he stepped down, net sales were ¥526.5 billion and operating income ¥15.2 billion.
