Background

He joined Sony in April 1987. He became Representative Director of Sony Bank in February 2002, Senior Vice President in December 2013, Representative Corporate Executive Officer, EVP and CFO in April 2018, and a director in June 2019. His career ran through running a financial subsidiary and group finance, and he has viewed the group from the side of capital rather than products.

Education: Waseda University

Selection

In April 2023 he succeeded Kenichiro Yoshida as President, COO and CFO. Yoshida remained Chairman and CEO; Totoki added the CEO title only in April 2025. In the fiscal year ended March 2023, the year before he took office, consolidated sales were ¥10,095.8 billion and operating income ¥1,302.4 billion (as restated in the annual securities report for the fiscal year ended March 2024; initially reported as ¥1,208.2 billion), near record levels. It was not a handover to rebuild after a crisis but the inheritance of a business with solid earnings power, with the CFO stepping straight up to lead execution.

Initiatives

In February 2024 Sony obtained certification of a business restructuring plan under the Act on Strengthening Industrial Competitiveness for a partial spin-off of its financial business, and announced the start of preparations the next day. The plan distributed one Sony Financial Group share in kind for each Sony share, handing more than 80% of its holding to shareholders while keeping just under 20%, and Sony Financial Group relisted on the TSE Prime Market on September 29, 2025. The finance business, begun in 1979 to offset the fragility of the core business, was returned to the capital markets 46 years later, and the group concentrated further on entertainment and semiconductors.
