Background

He joined the Industrial Bank of Japan in April 1979, moved to GE Capital Japan in May 2000 as head of business development, became Managing Executive Officer of GE Fleet Services in January 2001 and its President and CEO in May 2003. He joined Calsonic Kansei as an adviser in December 2007 and became Representative Director, President and CEO in June 2008, then joined Nidec as a special adviser in April 2013 and became Representative Director, Executive Vice President and COO in June 2014. His biography lists no work at semiconductor companies.

Selection

He joined Renesas Electronics in April 2016, was attached to the CEO for two months, and became Representative Director, President and CEO in June that year. Tetsuya Tsurumaru, who gave up the presidency, had been President since February 2013 and President and CEO since December 2015, and moved to Representative Director and Chairman in the same month of June 2016. The voting rights at the time were held by the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, which owned 69.15% in the fiscal year ended March 2015, and Hidetoshi Shibata and Tetsuro Toyoda, both from that body, sat on the board.

Initiatives

In February 2017 the company acquired all shares of Intersil of the US, making it a subsidiary, and in January 2018 Intersil absorbed Renesas Electronics America. In May 2017 it transferred its contract development and manufacturing and image recognition system businesses to Hitachi Maxell, and in July absorbed Renesas System Design. Consolidated net sales and operating income were ¥780.2 billion and ¥78.4 billion in the fiscal year ended December 2017 and ¥757.3 billion and ¥68.2 billion in the FY ended December 2018, and in the FY ended December 2019, which spanned his departure, operating income fell to ¥6.3 billion and the company swung to a net loss of ¥6.3 billion.
