Background
After working at Sumitomo Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Card and Bic Camera, he became an adviser to Japan Elevator Service Holdings in May 2017. After serving as a full-time Audit & Supervisory Board Member, he became Director, President and COO in June 2020. He was an outsider whose career ran through administration in banking, cards and retail rather than elevator maintenance engineering. Founder Katsushi Ishida continued as CEO, while Ueda handled execution as COO.
Selection
In June 2020 he took over the presidency, with the title of COO, from founder and President Katsushi Ishida. In the fiscal year ended March 2020, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥21.3 billion and operating income ¥2.7 billion, up 19% and 35% from the previous year. The change was not prompted by poor results but separated execution while the founder remained as CEO. Both his predecessor and successor were Ishida, and Ueda's presidency lasted only about two years.
Initiatives
During his two years the company acquired one regional elevator maintenance company after another and merged them into its regional operating subsidiaries, assembling a nationwide maintenance network. Consolidated net sales rose from ¥21.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2020 to ¥29.8 billion in the FY ended March 2022, and operating income from ¥2.7 billion to ¥4.1 billion. Although the period spanned the COVID-19 pandemic, a revenue structure built on accumulating maintenance contracts kept sales and profits growing.
