Background

Sadao Nakamura was born in Kyoto in 1917, graduated from Kyoto Imperial University in 1940 and joined ITOCHU that year. There he became a Director in May 1968, Managing Director in May 1972, Senior Managing Director in May 1975 and Director and Executive Vice President in June 1977. He had never worked at Kurita Water Industries and was brought in directly from his post as ITOCHU Executive Vice President.

Education: Kyoto Imperial University, Faculty of Law (now Kyoto University)

Selection

In September 1981 he succeeded Akira Sagawa as President, the third consecutive ITOCHU alumnus in the post after Shinzo Kaiishi and Akira Sagawa. Whereas his two predecessors had served as Executive Vice President or Senior Managing Director at Kurita before taking over, Nakamura moved directly from ITOCHU Director and Executive Vice President to president. In the fiscal year ended March 1981, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥57.081 billion and ordinary income ¥1.598 billion.

Initiatives

Net sales grew from ¥57.081 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1981, before he took office, to ¥71.253 billion in FY ended March 1985. Ordinary income more than doubled over the same period, from ¥1.598 billion to ¥3.735 billion. In FY ended March 1982, the year after he took office, net sales fell to ¥55.472 billion while ordinary income rose to ¥2.121 billion. Internal operations were handled by Kiyoyuki Horio, who became Director and Executive Vice President in June 1981. In June 1986 he handed the presidency to Kiyoshi Takaoka.
