Background
He joined the company in April 1987. He became an Executive Officer in June 2016 and was head of the Non-Ferrous Metals Division from June 2018. He became a Director in June 2019, Managing Executive Officer in June 2020 and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2022, and became President 37 years after joining. Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun reported that he came from the technical side.
Selection
In June 2024 he succeeded Akira Nozaki as Representative Director and President, the first change of president in six years. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended March 2024, consolidated operating profit was ¥95.8 billion on net sales of ¥1,445.3 billion, shrinking in two years to nearly a quarter of the ¥357.4 billion of FY ended March 2022. Net income also fell over the same two years from ¥281.0 billion to ¥58.6 billion. The appointment put the executive who had run the metals business in charge right after profits shrank.
Initiatives
In his first year, FY ended March 2025, consolidated net sales grew to ¥1,593.3 billion, while pretax profit fell to ¥31.4 billion and net income to ¥16.4 billion. In his second year, FY ended March 2026, results recovered to net sales of ¥1,741.6 billion, operating profit of ¥255.7 billion and net income of ¥176.3 billion. At a briefing after taking office he pledged to raise the earning power of core businesses and expand the growth strategy, and said the company would continue resource development because mineral resources are being depleted.
