Background
He joined NGK Spark Plug in April 1977 and, after serving as head of overseas aftermarket sales in the Automotive Components Group and as president of NGK Spark Plugs (U.S.A.), became President of the parent. He joined the board only in June 2007, 30 years after joining, and became a Managing Director in June 2010, just a year before becoming President. Through overseas aftermarket sales and running a local subsidiary, he had viewed the business from the selling side.
Selection
In June 2011 he succeeded Norio Kato as President. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended March 2011, consolidated net sales were ¥269.2 billion and operating profit ¥28.8 billion, a two-year recovery from an operating loss of ¥5.2 billion and a net loss of ¥71.6 billion in FY ended March 2009. The appointment appears to have handed the job of growing a business that had worked through its loss-making years to an overseas specialist who had led the U.S. subsidiary.
Initiatives
Over his eight years, consolidated net sales grew from ¥269.2 billion in FY ended March 2011 to ¥425.0 billion in FY ended March 2019, and operating profit from ¥28.8 billion to ¥55.3 billion. The workforce rose from 11,767 to 15,994 over the same period. He also became President and Executive Officer in April 2012, and from April 2016 combined the roles as Representative Director, Chairman and President.
